Kurogoma Black Sesame

Description: Kurogoma Black Sesame is a tropical plant that is even more aromatic and flavorful than other traditional sesame varieties.  Black sesame is most widely used for sushi, or Japanese Black Sesame ice cream.  However, I enjoy grinding them into a powder and using it as a topping for bingsu, which is a Korean shaved ice dessert.  It grows best in areas that have a long growing season, with lots of sun, a hot climate, and well draining soil.  It will thrive anywhere that cotton can be easily grown, like the deep South (zones 9-10).  It can be grown in an area with a shorter growing season, as well, but you'll have to start them indoors first, and transplant them later.  Sesame can grow between 3-5 feet tall, and produces beautiful pink flowers that resemble foxgloves, which then turn into little seed pods that contain 50-100 seeds each.  It is also pretty drought tolerant, once the plant is established, but they will require adequate moisture starting out.
